German-based retailer Metro reported 2.13 bln euros last year for its operations in Romania, up 9% from a year earlier.
This growth was mainly driven by the expansion of Real chain that last year opened no less then six units, reaching a 20-hypermarket network at the end of last year.
Thus, the sales of hypermarket division of the group amounted to 638 mln euros in Romania, up 74% from a year earlier.
As for the cash&carry division, it marked a roughly 6% decline (expressed in euros) in the local marketplace, down to 1.49 bln euros, and 5% increase (expressed in lei).
Metro Group recorded a 5.8% growth up to 68 bln euros. In Germany, Metro’s sales increased by 2% in 2008 from a year earlier, up to 26.7 bln euros. In Eastern Europe, Metro had one of the highest increases, of 15.3%, up to 18.1 bln euros.
