In contrast, the retailer’s sales in 2007 stood at 4.08 million euros. Both profit and headcount remained stable.

In 2008, 2Net Computer’s profit was 123,000 euros, 3,000 euros more than a year earlier, while headcount increased by 1, to 22.

9. GMB Computers

9. GMB ComputersAccording to the financial statements posted on the website of the Ministry of Finances, GMB Computers, company founded in 1991 by Mircea Boldea recorded sales of 4.09 million euros, versus 3.31 million euros in 2007.

The profit of the first personal computer and IT equipments provider launched in Constanta grew in 2008 to 487,000 euros, against 320,000 euros two years ago.

The development of GMB Computers’ business has led to an increase in headcount, from 96 in 2007 to 102 in 2008.

8. PC Garage

8. PC GaragePC Garage, one of the largest online retailers in Romania, posted sales of 7.47 million euros, up 50% from 5.1 million euros in 2007.

Earlier this year, Gabriel Vasile (photo), CEO of PC Garage said the company recorded sales of 10 million euros, up 80% from 5.5 million euros in 2007.

Moreover, the representative of the company was expecting the net profit to stay in the range of 1%, even though due to the struggling economic environment the realistic scenario included a break-even point. However, the 2008 results missed estimates, the retailer posting loss of 42,129 euros.

In 2007, the net profit was 1,804 euros. This year, the retailer has increased headcount, from 43 to 46.

7. Intend Computers

7. Intend ComputersThe Cluj-based company Intend Computer, established in 1992 reported sales of 8.2 million euros, 15% down from 9.5 million euros in 2007.

Even if the profit of the company owned and headed by Doru Morar dropped from 250,000 euros in 2007 to 95,000 euros in 2008, the headcount increased from 36 to 40 in the period under review.

6. Cel.ro

6. Cel.roCel.ro, the online store operated by Corsar Group recorded sales of nearly 10 million euros in 2008 – 9.42 million. The company’s turnover increased by 30% year-on-year from 7 million euros.

In the first quarter of 2009, Cel.ro performed well in the local tech retail market, reporting a turnover of approximately 10 million lei (2.33 million euros), up 30% from prior-year period.

However, the company’s profit fell from 300,000 euros in 2007 to 191,115 euros in 2008.

5. Market Online

5. Market OnlineMarket Online, company under Kelion Online Management reported a turnover of around 13.3 million euros last year, up 140% from 2007, according to the official statements of the company’s CEO made before his resignation.

Catalin Mihailescu, administrator of Kelion Online Management said the tech industry would be marked by bankruptcies and mergers this year, and that the hardware industry would suffer a 40-50% decline YoY.

4. PC Fun

4. PC FunPC Fun, online store held by Marius Ghenea (photo), chairman of FiT Distribution group (that also includes Electrofun.ro, ShopIT.ro and 24PC.ro) has increased turnover by nearly 3 million euros last year, up to 14.78 million euros.

According to the company’s financial data posted on the website of the Ministry of Finance, PC Fun booked a net profit of 15,400 euros last year, down from a year earlier.

3. Depozitul de Calculatoare

3. Depozitul de CalculatoareC.N.D.P.I Romsoft, the company that holds Depozitul de Calculatoare store chain, recorded last year a turnover similar to 2007, but swung to loss in 2008.

The company’s 2008 turnover stood at 48.1 million euros, versus 48.2 million euros two-years ago and loss of 957,000 euros versus a profit of 618,000 euros in 2007.

2. eMag

2. eMageMag remains the second largest tech retailer in Romania by turnover, after posting sales up 10% to 60.94 million euros. However, the profit was -2.86 million euros.

Two years ago, the online store had a turnover of 54.7 million euros and net profit of 242,269 euros.

In April this year, 51% equity in eMag was acquired by Asesoft Distrubution, one of the largest distribution companies in Romania.

1. K Tech Ultra Pro

1. K Tech Ultra ProK Tech Electronics that holds Ultra Pro Computers – the store chain with the biggest sales in the local tech retail industry in 2007, and now dealing with an insolvency procedure – started to feel the impact of the crisis since 2008. Ultra Pro Computers accounts for a half of the company’s total sales, the remaining 50% being attributed to the online and distribution divisions.

The company’s turnover fell from 74.6 million euros in 2007 to 68.6 million in 2008. Moreover, the retailer’s profit dropped from 137,000 euros to minus 3.5 million euros. The headcount shrank from 633 in 2007 to 535 in 2008.
