The sales of the Romanian unit of the world's largest home- furnishing retailer rose an annual 5 percent in the first three months this year, according to the retail manager Cornel Oprisan, who said consumers turned to long-term investments, with the economic crisis settling in the country.
Ikea sold at its store near Bucharest last year over 13 million products and cashed in 104.7 million euros.
Sales peaked in September, after the launch of the new catalog, at 9.4 million euros and over 275,000 visitors. Furniture accounted for 60 percent of the yearly sales, the rest being put down to home accessories and decorations.
The retailer rolled into the Romanian market in 2007 and has a headcount of 500 employees in Bucharest alone.
Ikea was registered in 1943 in Sweden. With the Bucharest store opening, the company portfolio numbered 35 countries with 623 million visitors and 198 million catalogs. Just as all the Ikea stores in the world, the Romanian branch is a franchise operated through an agreement with Inter Ikea Systems B.V. The owner of the Romanian franchise is Moaro Trading S.R.L
