Political crisis pushes leu further down vs euro

The RON/EUR exchange rate set by the National Bank of Romania increased by 0.1 percent to 4.2940 lei per euro, as the local currency continued its descent in the early trades, following the political turmoil after the government’s collapse. However, the national currency gained ground afterward, due to NBR’s alleged intervention.

The leu fell to the weakest level since March 23 when it was traded for 4.2946 lei.

The central bank posted an exchange rate of 4.2897 lei per euro yesterday.

The national currency traded between 4.2960 lei against euro at the opening and then fell to 4.30. The exchange rate soon fell to 4.2890 lei per euro and at 1:15 p.m. banks were buying a euro with 4.29 lei and selling it for 4.2950 lei.

In the region, the zloty climbed from 4.2261 to 4.1944 per euro and the forint soared from 269.09 to 267.06 versus Europe's single currency.

For the U.S. dollar, NBR’s exchange rate dropped 0.68 percent to 2.8812 lei per dollar, from 2.9008 in the previous session.
