The senior manager of Arcelor Mittal Galati, Ionel Bors told trade union leaders yesterday that the management could not raise workers’ pay in 2010, and that would remain at2008 level.

In 2008, the steelmaker increased wages by 9.5% but froze them at the end of the year on sluggish steel demand.

The leaders of the trade unions will meet today to give a joint response to the board’s offer. They said they were disappointed by the board’s answer to the 18% pay rise demands.

The trade union demanded a 25% increase in severance packages granted to steel workers in case of layoff, increase in bonuses and other compensations.
