The Government is discussing a back-up set of austerity measures with the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and World Bank, Prime Minister Emil Boc said earlier today, adding the package would be made public at the end of talks.
According to the Prime Minister, the IMF mission will not have to visit Romania for talks. “Negotiations can be held without the mission having to return in the country”. He added that the measures deemed as constitutional by the Constitutional Court – namely a 25% cut in public wages and the recalculation of pensions – will be implemented.
Emil Boc didn’t comment the decision of the Court, but said the solutions proposed in the two Laws for which the Government has assumed liability in the Parliament “were the most appropriate economically” for Romania, even it they involved political costs.
Sources in the Government told NewsIn the Executive considers a VAT hike from 19% to 24% following the court’s rejection of the austerity package.
Members of the Government met at Victoria Palace today in an informal session, after the Constitutional Court made public its decision.
