UPC Romania reports loss of TV service subscribers, but massive gains on internet and telephony segments

UPC Romania, Romania’s third largest landline operator, reported a 6% fall in number of subscribers for TV services, however the loss was wiped out by the growth on telephony and internet services, reads a report of Liberty Global.

On analog cable TV tier, the operator reported a 15% decline, from 1.26 million users, in September last year, down to 1.07 million in September 2008.

The digital TV segment registered a nearly 275% growth, from 19.600 subscribers in first nine months last year, up to 73,300 clients for this year’s similar interval. The loss on the analog TV service, was compensated with the advance of digital service, however there is no major nationwide coverage.

On satellite television broadcast for home reception (DTH), UPC Romania, actively involved in the market with Focussat brand, registered a nearly 60% growth, from 86,500 users, at the end of last year’s third quarter to approximately 138,000 clients this year.

DTH services market peaked 75 million euros last year, and for this year, players forecast a 60% growth, up to 120 million euros.

As for broadband segment, the company enhances portfolio by 42% up to 225,300 clients from 157,700 clients for internet service last year.

By this yearend, the operator estimates the number of Internet users will reach 9 million, and number of connections will exceed 7.5 million.

As for landline services, UPC Romania reported 120 thousand clients in September, up 50% from last year.
