Review of national currencys evolution versus euro
Benchmark currency exchange rate reported by central bank on December 31, 2008, of 3.9852 lei/euro signals stagnation compared to the rates in previous session, and 10.39% depreciation of the leu against 2007’s final rates, due to international turmoil.
On Tuesday, December 30, 2008, National Bank of Romania reported a benchmark rate of 3.9860 lei/euro and on December 28, 2007, the rate was 3.6102 lei/euro.
The local currency fell sharply through the end of the year, down to 4 lei/euro quotations, given the year-high of 3.4719 lei/euro.
On the currency market the local currency fluctuated within small bandwidth, namely 3.9850 – 4.0225 lei/euro, and at 15:00 in the afternoon, the banks were buying euro at 4.0175 lei and sell it at 4.0275 lei.
