Basescus prediction: 1.5%-2% economic growth in 2009

“I am optimistic we will run a positive economic growth in 2009, contrary to all estimates that indicate it will turn negative this year”, said the president Traian Basescu, who sees an advance of GDP between 1.5% and 2% this year.

“In spite of the massive slowdown of Romania’s economic growth, I remain optimistic, contrary to all somber estimations indicating it will turn negative”, said the president. He added that the economic growth Romania would run this year would be “narrow but positive”.

We will examine the possibility of a government action to stimulate lending amongst banks that have deliberately put lending on hold.

“Many borrowers believe that if we’re in the midst of crisis they are free to dodge rate payment. My request is that borrowers who don’t encounter difficulties in paying rents, to do it. In an effort to safeguard the banking system, we will examine the possibility of a government action to stimulate lending activity at banks that have deliberately put loans on ice,” Basescu said at a media briefing.
