Cegedim: 13.2% growth in antidepressant drug sale



If in United States of America the sales of anti-depressant drug sales grew by 15% last year, a similar trend was recorded in Romania, where the increase pace stood at 13.2% in national currency, according to Cegedim research.
“The sale of anti-depressant medicines increased last year below the 17.7% market average. However, it will be interesting to see the see the trend of the segment in the first quarter this year to make an opinion”, Petru Craciun, managing director of Cegedim Romania told Wall-Street.

According to Cegedim research, 94.6% of the antidepressant drugs sold last year in the retail chain were released on prescription.

In USA, the number of prescriptions for sleeping pills increased 7% from a year earlier; however the prescriptions for antidepressants jumped 15%, according to IMS Health research.

Although the majority of companies are experiencing dwindling sales, certain pharmaceutical companies are enjoying major increases in sales of anti-depressant drugs and sleeping pills, in spite of shrinking marketing expenditures.

The investments in advertising in US for sleeping pills fell from 190 mln dollars in 2007, to 150 mln dollars in 2008. Nevertheless, investments in advertising antidepressants remained constant.
