Retailer Real Romania doles out EUR 60m to cut ribbon for 3 new hypermarkets, despite the crisis

Retail chain Real Romania, part of Germany’s Metro Group, is set to allot some 60 million euros to open three new hypermarkets this year, defying the economic crisis, GM of the Real network in Romania Tjeerd Jegen told NewsIn.
Last year the network opened four new hypermarkets in five weeks towards the end of the year.

The company has a headcount of 7,600 in Romania and the counts 21 units in Romania, the most recently opened being in the Black Sea city of Constanta, after an investment of 20 million euros.

In 2008 Real broke the wallet open and invested over 120 million euros to expand its network countrywide. It rolled on the Romanian market in 2006.

Turnover reached 2.35 billion lei last year, after a skyrocketing advance of 92 percent over the previous year.

Its main competitors in Romania are hypermarkets chains Carrefour, Auchan and Cora and discount retailer Kaufland.
