Leu continues to lose ground against euro



Romania's national currency, the leu, followed the regional evolution and lost ground versus the single European currency after short inch during the first transactions, and the central lender BNR settled a reference exchange rate of 4.1574 lei per euro, up 0.11 percent over yesterday, NewsIn informs.
BNR posted a benchmark exchange rate of 4.1529 lei per euro in the previous session.

The national currency began today's session at 4.1520 lei per euro, close to yesterday's quotations, and then stepped up to 4.1465. It started to fall after 10:30 a.m. and reached 4.1645 lei per euro, and at 1:40 p.m. banks were buying a euro with 4.16 lei and selling it for 4.1650 lei.

Regional currencies also gained ground versus the euro during the first transactions and then dropped significantly. The Polish zloty rose from 4.3950 to 4.3768 over the euro and then plummeted to 4.4073, while the Hungarian forint inched from 279 to 278.5 over the euro and slipped to 280.89 after 10:30 a.m.
