Leu falls in early trades, recovers ground at noon



The benchmark exchange rate settled by the central bank NBR inched 0.09 percent to 4.1762 lei per euro today, after the national currency lost ground versus the euro in the early trades, similar to the Polish zloty and the Hungarian forint.
BNR posted a reference exchange rate of 4.1724 lei per euro yesterday.

The national currency fell from 4.1605 to 4.1825 versus the euro at rising bell, but recovered after 11 a.m. Banks were buying a euro with 4.1710 lei and selling it for 4.1780 lei at 1:40 p.m.

In the region, the zloty plummeted from 4.3735 to 4.4252 versus the euro and then climbed to the level recorded on opening, while the forint slipped gradually from 277.27 to 279.80 over the European currency and then increased back.

BNR's reference exchange rate also shows a 1.02 percent hike of the national currency versus the American dollar to 2.9938 lei per dollar, from 3.0247 in the previous session. This is the first time since January 7 when the exchange rate breaks down the 3 lei per dollar threshold.
