National Railway Company to lay off 3,700 workers



Romania's Transportation Ministry and railway trade unions reached an agreement which translates into the dismissal of 3,700 employees of the National Railway Company (CFR) and the slashing of bonuses tantamount for another 4,000 people.
The minister Radu Berceanu explained that by reducing bonuses the number of dismissals can be reduced from 8,000 to only 3,700 people approaching retiring age.

The leader of one of the trade union's division, Gheorghe Popa, declared today that if the negotiations prove successful, a new collective labor contract will be signed by May 27.

Previous discussions between the two parties revealed the idea of dismissing between 3,000 and 3,700 employees that are approaching retiring age and to close about 108 railway stations.

Popa mentioned that the trade union he leads accepts the idea of dismissing people soon to reach the retiring age so that the pension and salary would not overlap. He also supports the proposal to move the personal in between the three units involved in the railway transportation so that lay-offs are avoided.
