Retail industry shrinks 9.7% in April y/y



Retail lost 9.7 percent in April year-on-year, as fuel and non-food products sales shrank18.5 percent and 7.8 percent respectively, according to National Institute of Statistics, NewsIn informs.
The seasonally unadjusted data show a 10.3 percent decline versus April 2008.

Food sales also diminished by 2.7 percent. Retail and wholesale and the service activities for cars and motorcycles lost 31.6 percent year-on-year, as car sales dropped by 37.4 percent. The services area shrank by 15.4 percent, as travel agencies and tour operators slowed down by 35.9 percent.

The month-on-month rapport shows retail shrinking by 0.9 percent in April versus March. Non-food products sales lost 2.8 percent, while fuel and food products sales rose by 0.7 percent and 1.1 percent respectively. Car and motorcycle services activities increased by 11.5 percent. Services dropped by 4 percent in April versus March.
