Romanian leu sinks to eight-week low versus euro
The reference exchange rate settled by the National Bank of Romania reached a new eight-week high, to 4.2325 lei per euro, after the national currency depreciated 0.04 percent over yesterday, on a market with scarce activity and low volatility, following the evolution of emergent markets, NewsIn informs.
BNR last posted such a high rate on April 24, when the euro was traded for 4.2380 lei. The central bank established a reference exchange rate of 4.2306 lei per euro yesterday.
The leu rose from 4.2310 to 4.2295 over the euro and then lost ground to 4.2342. The exchange rate started to go down around noon and at 1:20 p.m, banks were buying an euro with 4.2290 lei and selling it for 4.2364 lei.
In the region, the zloty increased from 4.5310 to 4.5010 versus the euro and then fell to 4.5220, while the forint inched from 281.60 to 280.50 over the European currency and slipped to 282 afterwards.
BNR's reference exchange rate also indicates a 0.24 percent drop of the national currency versus the American dollar, to 3.0521 lei per dollar, from 3.0447 in the previous session.
