Carrefour Romania: Sales up 4.8% in H1



Carefour’s sales in Romania increased by 4.8% up to 532 million euros in first half this year, lifted by a good Q2 performance.
In the second quarter of 2009, the sales of Carrefour retailer in Romania rose 3% from year-ago quarter, totalling 282 million euros.

According to figures released in April by the retailer, Carrefour’s sales in Romania increased by 6.9% in first quarter up to 250 million euros, compared to 234 million reported in first quarter 2008.

The group’s first-quarter sales in Romania accounted for 1.1 in Carrefour’s total sales. Last year, Carrefour posted the highest growth in annual sales worldwide, of 51.8%, at a constant currency exchange rate, up to 1.19 billion euros.

Carrefour Romania operates 23 hypermarkets nationwide. The retailer is also present in the supermarket segment, after buying Artima store chain for 55 million euros, which later on, rebranded them into Carrefour Express.

Artima was operating 21 supermarkets, concentrated in western Romania, with a total retail area of 21,000 sqm.

Carrefour chain includes 15,000 stores, in 30 countries across Europe, Latin America and Asia. According to own statements, Carrefour’s turnover stood at 97.6 billion euros last year.

Carrefour Romania competes with Metro, Rewe (Selgros Cash&Carry, Billa and Penny Market).
