Number of public sector workers cut to 326,000 by 2015



Romania’s ministry of finance announced plans to eliminate up to 326,000 public sector jobs over the next 6 years, from 1,394,000 to 1,068,000, while public sector pay could rise 56% in average until 2015, according to the draft forwarded to the trade unions by the minister.
According to the government plan, the number of public sector workers would fall by 150,000 next year, up to 1,244,000 while pushing for cuts in pay negotiations, according to the plan submitted to trade unions.

Under the government’s plan of cutting public spending, the number of public sector workers would shrink to 1,207,000 in 2011 and to 1,170,000 in 2012. The minimum wage would increase next year to 705 lei and to 764 lei in 2011. The minimum wage is likely to reach 845 lei in 2012 to 934 in 2013 , to 1,016 lei in 2014 and to 1,100 in 2015.

According to data presented by Ministry of Finances, salaries would increase as late as in 2011 by 8.3, the public sector enjoying a substantial 10.7% pay rise no sooner than 2012.
