Leu slumps to six-week low against euro



Romania's national currency, the leu, fell against euro in line with the regional currencies at debut, the National Bank of Romania announcing a benchmark exchange rate of 4.2372 lei per euro, the highest level of the past six weeks.
NBR last reported such a high exchange rate on July 21, when the leu stood at 4.2378 per euro.

The single European currency parked at 4.2229 lei yesterday, according to NBR’s benchmark exchange rate.

The leu waved near 4.2360 – 4.2370 per euro on opening, but slipped to 4.2380 – 4.24 afterwards. At 1:45 p.m. banks were buying a euro with 4.2360 lei and selling it for 4.2370 lei.

For the U.S. dollar, NBR’s exchange rate jumped 1.14 percent to 2.9807 lei per dollar, from 2.9470 in the previous session. The leu last stood at such a low level on August 19, when the central bank established an exchange rate of 2.9951 lei per dollar.
