Midday Forex: Leu rallies to eight-week low vs euro



The official exchange rate settled by the National Bank of Romania dropped 0.20 percent to 4.2046 lei per euro, the lowest level of the past eight weeks, after the national currency continued its uptrend following high currency demand, NewsIn informs.
The central bank last reported such a low level for the single European currency on July 30, when it was traded for 4.2038 lei. NBR posted an exchange rate of 4.2132 lei per euro yesterday.

The leu stood at 4.22 versus the euro in the early trades, but climbed to 4.2016 after the first transactions. At 1:10 p.m. banks were buying a euro for 4.1995 lei and selling it for 4.2085 lei.

In the region, the forint lost ground from 270.80 to 271.5 over the euro and then inched to 270.25, while the zloty fell from 4.1830 to 4.2240 per euro and then strengthened to 4.19.

NBR’s exchange rate for the U.S. dollar rose 0.35 percent to 2.8625 lei per dollar, from 2.8524 in the previous session, the lowest level since the end of last year.
