Retail trade down 12.1 % in August
Retail sales fell 12.1% in August compared to the same period of last year, largely weighed down by the sagging fuel and non-food sales, according to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics.
August figures don’t include vehicle sales and are adjusted to seasonality and number of business days. Gross retail sales fell 12.2% year-on-year.
The volume of retail trade was pulled down by the sharp decline in fuel (-20.3%) and non-food sales (-12.8%). Sales of food, drinks and tobacco dropped 3.4% versus August 2008.
Data adjusted to seasonality and number of working days for the volume of wholesale, retail trade and vehicle repair dropped 43.8% compared to the same period of last year, amid a 54.1% slump in car sales.
Services sector adjusted to seasonality and working days decreased by 20.6% year-on-year, largely due to the slowdown of travel agencies and tour-operators’ activity.
In terms of monthly changes, volume of retail sales increased by 0.4%in August, after sales of food, drinks and tobacco rose 3.9%, while fuel sales advanced by 0.4% from July 2009. Non-food sales fell 1.1%.
Gross retail sales increased by 1.5% in the period under review.
The volume of wholesale, retail trade and vehicle repair went up 1.7% in August compared to the July this year, while services sector fell 2.4%.
Jan-Aug data show retail trade fell 10.6%.
