Romgaz, Transgaz and CE Craiova to jointly develop carbon capture project
Natural gas supplier Romgaz, gas carrier Transgaz and electricity supplier CE Craiova will work together to develop the first project to capture carbon dioxide, as part of a partnership between Romania and Norway.
“The companies will conduct the prefeasibility study on the site. The findings of the study will be submitted to the European Union. The project will be carried out in partnership with a company from Norway, which will contribute with €100 mln. The proposal is pending for approval by the Government of Norway”, said the secretary of state at the Ministry of Economy, Tudor Serban.
“Talks on the issue advance as planned. By January 1, 2010, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Romania and Norway will meet to renew the memorandum of cooperation signed few years ago”, secretary of state added.
The carbon dioxide capture project will most likely be developed together with Norway’s largest energy supplier Statkraft. The estimated project cost is around €500mln as the Ministry of Economy said earlier this year.
In June this year, Tudor Serban said the Norwegian company’s contribution will be around €200 mln and Romania will cover the rest of the costs. He also added that it hadn’t been yet decided on how the country will cover its share of the project.
Electricity and heat supplier CE Craiova, same as other heating plants across the country, is one of the biggest CO2 emitters. “All heating plants face enormous challenge, and are at risk of being closed down. Reducing the CO2 emissions is a priority. The entire industry is running projects and programs aimed at resolving the environmental issues”, said the state secretary at the Ministry of Economy.
The three electricity plants in Oltenia (Turceni, Rovinari and Craiova) collectively provide a third of Romania’s electricity demand.
