Competition Council clears Cosmote/Zapp deal

Competition Council has approved Cosmote’s takeover of carrier Zapp, the largest telecom deal in Romanian market in 2009 to date.
For analyzing the possible antitrust issues raised by the deal, Romania’s competition regulator took into account data provided by the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM), by the parties involved in the deal as well as their peers’ input on the deal.

Competition Council found that there is an overlapping of economic activities carried by Telemobil and Deutsche Telekom’s member companies, largely in the mobile telecommunication retail services.

The investigation conducted by the Competition Council showed that the competitive effects of Cosmote’s takeover of Telemobil were unlikely to substantially lessen competition in the market, and therefore, comply with the antitrust regulation.
