Midday Forex: Leu remains bullish against euro



The National Bank of Romania has set a reference rate of 4.2077lei against its European peer, 0.44% below yesterday’s level, as the leu was stronger in the morning trade but fell gradually to 4.21units/euro, in line with the regional currencies.
On Monday, the National Bank of Romania set a reference rate of 4.2265lei/euro.

The national currency inched up from 4.22 to 4.20 against euro in the morning trade, but fell back to 4.21lei/euro. At 13:30, banks were buying a euro for 4.2050 lei and selling it for 4.21lei.

“The leu moved higher today in line with its peers in the regions. However, the main interest rate cut from 8% to 7.5% has pushed the leu 70basis points lower. But the effect of the rate cut was short-lived as the rate remained below 4.21 lei/euro”, a dealer told NewsIn.

In the region, the polish zloty rose in the morning from 4.0820 to 4.0680 and fell afterwards to 4.0940 against euro. The Hungarian forint edged up from 268.60 to 267.50 against euro in the morning trade but dropped to 269.30 at noon.

For the US dollar, the reference rate set by the National Bank of Romania today grew 0.73% from yesterday’s 2.9401lei/US dollar to 2.9186.
