Health minister considers tax on fast-food
As of today, the Ministry of Health will discuss the proposal of levying a “sin tax” on fast-food, a measure that could help fund the state’s health programs.
“The new tax would be levied on sales at fast-food restaurants, and this could help us fund health programs underway and investments in the system’s infrastructure,” said Attila Cseke (photo), ministry of health.
Food and Nutrition Commission within the Ministry will hammer out the final points of the measure and will hold talks with fast-food producers.
Cseke stressed that 2010 will be a difficult year for the health system, that has an allocated budget of 4,191.6 million lei, slightly higher than 4,044.6 million lei a year earlier.
“We are on a tight budget. As we have seen from the report on the health system in 2008 issued by the Presidential Commission, the state must allocate to this sector around 6% of GDP in 4-7 years,” Cseke Attila continued.
