Midday Forex: Leu turns lower against euro



The EUR/RON reference rate set by the National Bank of Romania climbed 0.24% from the seven-month high touched yesterday by the leu, to 4.1721lei/euro, in line with its peers in the region.
On Wednesday, the central bank set a reference rate of 4.1620lei/euro, the lowest since May 19,2009.

The local currency had a strong start in the morning deals, but fell afterwards from 4.1530units/euro to 4.1750. At 13:40 banks were buying a euro for 4.1705 lei and selling it for 4.1745 lei.

“Despite the bearish trend of the leu, in line with the region, there are many buy orders for euro, especially from foreign banks,” a dealer said.

In the region, the Polish zloty dropped from 4.0920 to 4.1190 units/euro, while the forint inched down from 268.60 to 270.05 units/euro.

For the US dollar, the reference rate set by the NBR is 2.9089 lei/dollar, up 0.35% from yesterday’s rate of 2.8987lei/dollar.
