17,000 public sector workers could lose jobs in 2010

The Ministry of Interior said it plans to lay off 16,742 civil service workers this year, with most of the staff cuts being planned for the rural area, under a broader cost-cutting program.
The program is included in a law draft proposed for debate by the Ministry of Interior.

Under the provisions of the draft law, the layoff of 16,472 will be made as follows: villages – 8,772 workers, cities – 2,224, municipality and Bucharest districts – 4,785 and county councils and the City Hall of Bucharest – 961.

The document provides the introduction of cost standards for each civil service agency in Romania, which is expected to save 471,587 million lei in payroll costs. The Ministry of Interior officials stressed that the introduction of these cost standards will have a positive impact over the budget plan as it would help the country save 493.1 million lei in 2011, 518.8 million in 2012 and 547.1 million lei in 2013.
