Midday Forex: Leu hits fresh 1-year high



The leu remained strong in the interbank market today against euro, in line with its peers in the region on low monetary interest rates, while the reference rate fell to a one-year low – 4.1008 lei/euro.
The leu rose to its highest level since January 7, 2009, when the National Bank of Romania set a reference rate of 4.0720 lei/euro. The reference rate set by the central bank is 0.39% below Friday’s level of 4.1167 l ei/euro.

The national currency rose in the morning versus euro from 4.1120 to 4.0950 but fell at noon to 4.10 lei/euro. At 13:35, banks were buying a euro for 4.1005 lei and selling it for 4.1095 lei.

“The market is very quiet, without any major transactions and the exchange rates are following the regional course”, a dealer told NewsIn.

In the region, the Hungarian forint fell in the early trades from 267.2 to 268 units/euro, but recouped afterwards to 267.7. The Polish zloty rose from 4.0360 to 4.0190 units/euro only to drop slightly at noon to 4.0250 units/euro.

For the US dollar, the reference rate set by the National Bank of Romania is 2.8513 lei/US dollar, down 0.34% from Friday’s rate of 2.8609 lei/dollar.
