Transgaz casts doubt over its involvement in South Stream
The decision to take part in the South Stream gas pipeline project will be made only after “the completion of the feasibility studies”, when the company will know the costs and elements it involves.
The state-run gas company said it had received a letter of intent to take part in the feasibility studies for the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline project.
“Diversification of gas imports and increase of Romania’s energy security are the key objectives of the national energy strategy, and any large project that can be developed in the country’s territory and generate economic, financial and social advantages is to be considered”, said Transgaz.
The Minister of Economy, Adriean Videanu said Transgaz had been approached by Gazprom to take part in the southern corridor plan, stressing that the Romanian Government didn’t received a letter in this regard.
“No, it was not the Government that received the letter, but Transgaz”, Videanu added.
The state secretary with the Ministry of Economy, Tudor Serban told RFI Romania radio station, that Romania hadn’t received any official invitation to support the South Stream energy project.
A delegation from the world’s largest gas company, Gazprom, led by vice president Aleksandr Medvedev, arrived on February 17 at Bucharest and met with representatives from the Ministry of Economy to tackle the South Stream project.
