Isarescu and Vladescu meet with Senate leaders to discuss austerity cuts

The governor of the National Bank of Romania and minister of Public Finances will meet chairman of the Senate and leaders of the chamber today at 13:00.
A team of Senate members led by chairman Mircea Geoana met with IMF officials yesterday, at the request of the Senate chairman.

Mircea Geoana sent on May 5 an invitation to governor NBR Mugur Isarescu and minister of Public Finances Sebastian Vladescu to attend talks over the austerity measures enforced by the Government to meet targets imposed by the IMF.

“Under current economic conditions and public concern over a possible raise in taxes and the extent of the state sector layoff, the chairman of the Senate, Mircea Geoana has sent an invitation to Mugur Isarescu, governor of National Bank of Romania and to the minister of Public Finances, to attend meeting with the Permanent Bureau of the Senate. The talks will focus on the current economic conditions, given the progress of IMF loan, the risks and opportunities arising, and the possible solutions to the country’s debt problems”, reads a press release.
