Pensioners stage protests in front of Cotroceni Palace

Approximately 500 pensioners took part in a picket in front of the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest from 10:00, after the government announced sweeping spending cuts, including the 15% drop in retirement benefits.
Protesters are holding placards and banners declaring “Mr President, you fooled us”, “We want a decent living”, asking the government not to cut pensions.

The National Federation of Pensioners Unions in Romania (FNSPR) said the retirees associations are picketing today in front of Cotroceni Palace and county prefects’ offices to protest against the decision to cut pensions by 15%.

The national associations of pensioners are asking the president Traian Basescu not to cut pensions “that are already low by freezing them to 2009 level”, the Federation said. The protest will be held between 10:00 and 12:00.
