10 top-paying Government institutions
Although in 2009, the Romanian economy tumbled into recession, and the private sector was suffering severe job cuts or layoffs, public employee compensation remained chiefly fat. The Government paid 1.17 billion lei on wages last year, in 10 institutions listed according to average gross medium income and benefits received last year.
10. Constitutional Court - 5,747 lei/month
The institution spent 6.13 million on wages, according to disclosure on public sector pay.
The Constitutional Court is the only court that deals with constitutional law, independent from any other public authority.
9. Public Ministry - 6,004 lei/month
Although the Public ministry awarded its employees with fiscal incentives, their level was reduced to 138,717 lei.
8. Ministry of Regional Development and Housing - 6,125 lei/month
The Ministry of Regional Development and Housing spent 48.1 million lei on wages to around 655 employees on its payroll.
7. Court of Auditors - 6,135 lei/month
The Court of Auditors spent 103 million lei on wages last year, and awarded premiums worth 1 million lei.
6. Office for Preventing and Combating Money Laundering - 6,735lei/month
The institution spent 7.7 million lei on wages last year.
5. Competition Council - 7,384 lei/month
The gross salary at the antitrust authority averaged 7,384 lei a month in 2009, the institution spending around 27.1 million lei on wages in the trailing year.
4. Ministry of Labor, Family and Social Protection - 7,705 lei/month
However, adding the premiums, the monthly pay packet received by the employees of the Ministry of Labor, Family and Social Protection topped 7,700 lei in 2009.
3. Ministry of Foreign Affairs - 8,059 lei/month
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spent 227 million lei on wages last year.
2. High Court of Cassation and Justice - 8,755 lei/month
The institution spent 50 million lei last year on wages and 14,259 lei on premiums.
1. Superior Council of Magistracy - 9,771 lei/month
The institution didn’t award any bonuses last year, but spent around 40 million lei on employee compensation.
