Top 10 largest pharmaceutical companies

The list of ten largest pharmaceutical companies in the local market didn’t suffer major changes in the first quarter 2010 from end-2009, despite the 17.3% market growth to 2.34 billion lei, according to data provided by the research company Cegedim.

10. Abbott

Abbott (including Solvay), took the tenth spot, with sales of 231.1 million lei over the past 12 months, and a market share of 2.7%.

In the first quarter, the company recorded revenues of 64.9 million lei, and a market share of 2.7%.


9. Astrazeneca

The British-Swedish pharma company reported sales of 89.7 million lei in the three-month period into March and a market share of 3.8%. Astrazeneca grabbed the ninth spot in the top 10 list of largest pharmaceutical companies by their first-quarter revenues.

For the past 12 months, Astrazeneca recorded a market share of 3.5% and revenues of 295.5 million lei.


8. Daiichi Sankyo

Daiichi Sankyo drug company (including Terapia Ranbaxy) said its revenues stood at 85.4 million lei in the Jan-Apr period, grabbing a market share of 3.6% in the period under review.

For the past 12 months, Daiichi Sankyo’s market share came in at 3.8%, while revenues totaled 322.9 million lei.


7. Merck & Co

Merck & Co (including Schering Plough) came in at no. 7 in the list of ten largest drug companies, with sales of 109.5 million lei and a market share of 4.6% in the first quarter 2010.

Drug sales for the past 12 months stood at 387.9 million lei, and the market share was similar to that recorded in the first-quarter.


6. Servier

Drug retailer Servier (including Egis) reported a turnover of 449.6 million lei for the past 12 months, and a market share of 5.3%.

The company took the sixth spot in the list, as sales totaled 123.6 million lei in the first quarter. The company’s market share stood at 5.2% in the period under review.


5. Novartis

In the first quarter this year, Novartis (including Sandoz) reported sales of 140.9 million lei, and a market share of 6% in Romania. Thus, the company grabbed the fifth spot in the list.

However, over the past 12 months, Novartis’ market share stood at 2.4% and turnover at 508.8 million lei.


4. GlaxoSmithKline

GlaxoSmithKline (including Europharm), the world’s fourth largest drug company, takes the fourth spot in Romania as well, with a turnover of 143.4 million lei and a market share of 6.1% in the first quarter 2010.

For the past 12 months, the company reported a turnover of 522 million lei and a market share of 6.2%.


3. Pfizer

The New York-based drug company Pfizer (including Wyeth and excluding Actavis) reported sales of 159 million lei in Romania and a market share of 6.7%.

Similarly, for the past 12 months, the company posted a market share of 6.7% and sales of 563.8 million lei.


2. Hoffman La Roche

The Swiss drug company Hoffman La Roche (excluding Terapia) based in Basel, takes the second spot in the list of largest pharmaceutical companies by their first-quarter sales, with a turnover of 206.6 million lei and a market share of 8.8%.

For the past 12 months, the company recorded sales of 773.3 million lei and a market share of 9.1%.


1. Sanofi-Aventis

Sanofi-Aventis (including Zentiva ) remains the leader of the local pharmaceutical industry, with a market share of 9.4% and sales of 220.6 million lei.

Sanofi-Aventis has defended its no.1 spot also in the list of companies by their 12-month performance, with sales of 821.8 million lei and a market share of 9.7%.
