EU hammers out the final points of the Danube strategy
EU Danube strategy, a model for regional development at a European level, an initiative introduced by Romania and Austria in 2008, will be completed by the end of the year, the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism said.
“From an economic perspective, the Strategy will open up new opportunities to the business environment by improving access, by modernizing harbor, and airport infrastructure as well as the road and rail network by creating a multi-modal transport system, developing and expanding utilities infrastructure. Romania’s priority is to highlight the importance and role of the Danube as a priority axis for inland waterway traffic in the region”, said Elena Udrea, Minister of Regional Development and Tourism.
Danube strategy is an internal strategy of the European Union to which neighboring countries are invited to attend. The three areas proposed by the European Commission for the Strategy are: connectivity (navigability, energy, telecommunications), environment protection, improvement of water quality and socioeconomic development (culture, education, travel, rural development).
The Danube is the second largest river after the Volga and flows for a distance of some 2860km. The Romanian section covers almost a third of the surface area of the basin and over a third of the river’s length flows through the country. The river flows through ten countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine and Serbia), and four capitals (Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade).
