Midday Forex: Leu hits fresh new low against euro



The National Bank of Romania set a reference rate of 4.2372 lei/euro today, 0.28% above yesterday level, the leu touching a fresh new low of the year.
The national currency hasn’t been that low since December 16, 2009, when the central bank set a reference rate of 4.2459 lei/euro. On Wednesday, the central bank set a reference rate of 4.2254 lei/euro.

The leu had a poor start today, and fell from 4.2290 against euro to 4.2440, but returned to near opening quotes, and at 12:30, banks were trading a euro for 5.2350 lei/euro.

Currencies in the region followed a similar trend today, with the Polish zloty from 4.0655 to 4.1010 units against euro and returned to early day quotes at noon. The Hungarian forint dropped from 279.50 to 281.50 units versus euro, and grew to 278 units/euro at noon.

Versus the U.S. dollar, the National Bank of Romania set a reference rate of 3.4196 lei/dollar, 0.45% below yesterday level of 3.4350 lei/U.S. dollar.
