Wizz Air reports 31% increase in passenger traffic

Low-cost airline Wizz Air said it carried 736,000 passengers to and from Romania in the Jan-May period, 31% more than the same period of last year, when it carried 562,000 passengers.
In the period, Wizz Air had a load factor of 80%.

In June, the Hungarian-based carrier had a market share of 45.5% in the low-cost segment, at a narrow difference from Blue Air with 43.8% according to data provided by the airline. “Our operations in Romania had the best performance in the group in 2010”, said Gyorgy Abran (photo), chief commercial officer Wizz Air.

“We’re on track to exceed the 2 million passenger mark this year. The 31% growth is largely attributed to the capacity boost from Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest and hence to the newly-added routes and increase of flight frequency at all the three air bases, including Timisoara. Bucharest operations will account for 50% of Wizz Air’s passenger traffic operations in Romania”, said Gyorgy Abran.

As of this summer, Wizz Air will increase its fleet in Romania by adding two new wide-bodied A320 aircrafts, one of which already being in service in Cluj as of June, and the second one is expected to go into operation in June 26 in Bucharest. Wizz Air’s fleet has thus been increased to eight aircrafts and the recent developments will create 70 new jobs (pilots and crew).

Wizz Air carried more than 8.4 million passengers over the past 12 months. Wizz Air fleet is comprised of 32 Airbus A320 servicing 12 air bases in Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Czech Republic.
