Romania's Executive aims to save EUR 4.5m by slashing the number of government secretaries

The Executive estimates to save 4.5 million euros annually by reducing the number of government secretaries to minimum two for each ministry, except for the Interior Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and by slashing the number of subprefects.

Premier Emil Boc declared at the end of the government meeting on Wednesday that the state spends about 110,000 euros per year for each government secretary and 77,000 euros for a subprefect, NewsIn states.

The state will save 2 million euros per year after 18 government secretaries and subsecretaries will be dismissed and about 800,000 euros by the end of the year, said the Executive's spokeswoman, Ioana Muntean. The state will also save 2.5 million euros annually after 35 subprefects will be sent home.

The government decided last week that each ministry to keep two government secretaries, except for the Interior Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry which will have three.
