Romania's total public debt rose 12.6 percent in June over the end of last year and reached 123.61 billion lei, representing 23.27 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) initially estimated for the year, according to data published by the Ministry of Finances(MFP), NewsIn informs.
The government initially anticipated a GDP of 531.251 billion lei at year-end, corresponding to a 4 percent economic contraction, but revised estimate down to 497.3 billion lei, calculating an 8 – 8.5 percent economic contraction.
Romania's public debt at the end of June represents 24.86 percent of the newly estimated GDP.
The total public debt stood at 109.75 billion lei at the end of 2008 and represented 21.78 percent of last year's GDP, according to MFP.
At the end of June, about two thirds of the public debt was in the national currency, 25.3 percent in euros and 10.6 percent in other currencies.
The weight of the public governmental debt in the total debt load rose by 1.38 percentage points versus the end of 2008, from 91.58 percent to 92.96 percent, while the local public debt stood for 7.04 percent of the total debt.
