Median monthly earnings climbed 25.6% in 2008

In 2008, the median gross monthly pay in Romania was 1,761 lei, up 26.1% (365 lei) versus 2007.

Median earnings above the national average were observed in financial intermediation and insurances (2.4-fold higher), public sector (+84.2%), electricity, gas, air conditioning and hot water supply sector (82.5% above the national average), mining (+74.7%), information and communications (+61.9%), professional activities (+33.6%).

Median monthly earnings below the national average were observed in hotels and restaurants (-40.0%), other services (-36.2%), agriculture (-30.2%), trade (-20.4%), processing industry (-19.8%), construction (-11.2%), entertainment (-8.7%).

Women earned 114 lei in average less than male employees, with a median gross monthly pay of 1,700 lei (versus 1,814 lei for male employees), and a net monthly earning of 1,264 lei (versus 1,348 lei for male employees).

The biggest gaps by gender in median monthly earnings were observed in processing industry (28.3%), financial intermediation and insurances, male employees earning 25% in average more than women.

The statistical office also shows that employers spent 2,296 lei/employee/month in average, 25.2% more than in 2007, and 13.32lei/employee/hour, 25.2% more than a year earlier.
