The National Bank of Romania set Thursday a reference rate of 4.1833lei/euro, up 0.82% from yesterday, the highest in four months, as other currencies in the region remained mostly weak against their European counterpart.
The national currency slid today to the weakest level since January 5, 2010, when the central bank set a reference rate of 4.2077 lei/euro.
The leu had a poor start, trading near 4.19 lei/euro in the morning, but rose afterwards to 4.1760units/euro. However, the leu gave up much of its early gains in midday trade, and at 13:05, a euro was bought for 4.1840 lei.
In the region, the Polish zloty fell further against euro, from 4.08 to 4.12 zloty/euro and grew back to 4.07 units against euro in midday trade. The Hungarian forint dropped from 278 to 281 forints/euro and rose to 277 forints/euro at noon.
For the U.S. dollar, the National Bank of Romania set a reference rate of 3.2759 lei/dollar, up 2.45% from 3.1975 lei/dollar yesterday.
