Midday Forex: Leu grows modestly against euro

The National Bank of Romania set a reference rate of 4.2163 lei/euro, down slightly (0.11%) from yesterday, after a strong performance of the national currency versus its European peer in the inter-bank market.

Yesterday, the central bank set a reference rate of 4.2208 lei/euro.

The leu had a strong start in the morning, increasing from 4.2195 lei/euro to 4.2117 lei/euro but lost much of the early gains at noon and at 13:00 banks were trading a euro for 4.1260.

In the region, the Polish zloty was trading higher at opening, but traded within 4.0944 and 4.0827 units/euro band at noon. The Hungarian forint fell in the early trades from 278.23 to 230 forints/euro, and recouped afterwards to 278.43 forints/euro.

Versus the US dollar, the central bank set a reference rate of 3.4775 lei/dollar, down 0.53% from Thursday.
