Environment Minister Nicolae Nemirschi had previously pledged on February 11 the auto tax would be reduced through a new emergency ordinance and those who had paid the triple tax could receive their money back.
The minister mentioned the element that had kindled the decision to release a new emergency ordinance had been a notification from the European Commission with respect to tripling the tax for second-hand cars. The ministry will therefore seek the commission's approval of the new tax.
On the medium run, the ministry plans to propose a law draft different from the ordinance that will address all types of vehicles and will calculate the tax considering the engine capacity and the amount of carbon dioxide released.
