In the ten months through October this year, municipalities issued 41,861 building permits, 21.2% fewer than the same period of 2008, and in October, 13.1% fewer than in September, according to data provided by the statistical office (NIS).
In January-October period, the sharpest drops were observed in Bucharest-Ilfov area (-1,786 permits), Center (-1,775), North-East (-1,764), and South-Muntenia (-1,731 permits).
Of all the building permits issued for residential buildings in October, 67.1% (2,753) are for the rural area. Broken down by regions, the number of permits fell across the board. The biggest drops were observed in Center (-235 permits), North-East (-128) and South-Muntenia (-114).
In the Western region, the number of permits for home buildings increased by 33%.
In October, 1,574 fewer home-building permits were issued than the same period of last year (5,677), a decline reflected in all regions. The biggest drops were observed in Center (-537), North-East (-340), South-Muntenia (-262) and Bucharest-Ilfov (-145).
