NBR: No bank in Romania is facing liquidity shortage

“I assure you that absolutely no bank in the system is facing liquidity problems, and that all banks in Romania are within normal parameters set by National Bank of Romania, “ Nicolae Cinteza said on Wednesday at a media briefing, aired by Realitatea TV.

The statement of NBR representative is designed to buffer rumors appeared regarding stability of banks in Romania, in the context of international financial crisis, rumors that led to a massive withdrawal of savings from banks.

“There are rumors on the issues that banks are facing, or are likely to face, and I assure you that there is no reason to worry. All banks have liquidities in compulsory minimum reserves at NBR,” Cinteza added.

He stressed on the trend of withdrawing money from banks, adding that this trend must not expand on panic sentiment, fuelled by rumors.

“All banks are facing deposits dissolutions. There is no significant growth, but there is a growth,” from which everybody has to lose.

He iterated position of the central bank, made public by NBR governor, Mugur Isarescu as well.

“NBR is ready to shore up banking system, in case they face liquidity draught,” head of Supervisory department stated, adding that for the moment, there is still liquidity surplus in the financial system.
