The euro and the dollar grew against a basket of emerging currencies today, including Romanian leu. The RON/EUR reference rate set by the National Bank of Romania grew 0.44%.
The central bank set a reference rate of 4.1397 lei against euro, 2% higher than Thursday’s level of 4.1214. The leu hasn’t been that weak since January 21, when NBR set a rate of 4.1440lei/euro.
“The suffered a minor drop today against its European peer, a trend that was tightly correlated to EUR/USD rates. However, after reaching 4.1450, the leu held steady, as NBR reaffirmed its commitment to contain currency fluctuation within a narrow band”, Ciprian Mihai Head of Treasury Volksbank Romania told NewsIn.
In the morning the leu was trading near 4.1370 units/euro, and fell steadily to 4.1450 units/euro followed by a mild rebound. At 13:50 EET, the euro was quoted at 4.1387 lei.
In the region, the currencies suffered declines against euro. The zloty fell from 4.0720 to 4.1010 units/euro and took sudden turn afterwards to 4.09units against euro. The Hungarian forint traded within 273.70 – 274.50 band.
For the US dollar, the reference rate set by the National Bank of Romania grew 1.61% to 3.0228 lei/dollar from Thursday’s 2.9749.
