Sales of new cars produced in Romania fell by 56.1 percent year-on-year, from 28,197 to 12,365 units, while those from abroad dropped by 48.4 percent, from 62,368 to 32,193 units.
In April, sales of new cars produced in Romania went down 33.1 percent year-on-year to 4,595 units, while those made by foreign producers decreased 36.8 percent to 10,289 unit. However, the number of new cars sold in April rose 10.38 percent month-on-month to 14,884 units.
The Romanian auto market, including cars, commercial vehicles and buses, plummeted 54.9 percent in the first four months compared to the same period in 2008, to 49,971 vehicles. As many as 110,839 vehicles were sold in the first four months of 2008.
The Romanian car market stood at 16,458 units in April, down 42.4 percent year-on-year.
Romania's top automaker Dacia sold the highest number of cars in April (4,595 units), being followed by Renault with 1,189 units, Ford with 1,040 units and Hyundai with 1,028 units.
After the first four months, Dacia sold 12,365 units, Hyundai 4,231 units, Volkswagen 3,616 units, Renault 3,314 units, Skoda 3,113 units and Ford 2.553 units.
