Wizz Air strategy for 2008-2009

In one of the “darkest” periods since the launching of low-cost concept in the airline industry, Wizz Air, one of the biggest players in the field, comes up with the best solution for the market in Romania: raising twofold transport capacity and introducing 15 new routes in the following six months.

Thus, the first flight will be directed to Timisoara, the tenth operation airbase of the airline company, and the third in Romania, which will be opened in February 15 2009, following an investment estimated by the company at over 100 million euros. The flights’ destinations from Timisoara will be London, Dortmund, Rome, Milan, Venice, Barcelona, Paris and Valencia.

“Furthermore, Wizz Air will expand operations in Bucharest by adding there the next delivered new Airbus A320 aircraft which will operate from Baneasa airport. The new aircraft will allow flights frequency growth on already existent routes, but also starting up new routes to Paris, Madrid and Bologna, as of March 2009,” said Natasha Kazmer, Corporate Communication and Public Affairs Manager of the company. Cluj Napoca will receive its third aircraft as of May 1 2009.
As for implementing new routes, Wizz Air representative stated: “Wizz Air will launch 15 new routes in the following six months, meanwhile aiming at supplementing the frequency of weekly flights on already existent routes. As for future plans, Wizz Air representative did not excluded a possible partnership with other airports in Romania.

“We are in talks with almost all airports in Romania and we seriously consider an expansion of flights to Moldova, where the potential is still high” she said. Even if during the winter, low-cost airline operator halted the national flight from Bucharest to Cluj Napoca, the company did not exclude a development of national routes in Romania, in the near future. “When we consider implementing new routes, we take into account the potential of that route, the support of local authorities, and also the business potential of the destination” Natasha Kazmer added.

Romania is the second most important country for Wizz Air operator, after Poland, in terms of number of passengers, incomes, airbases and aircrafts. “This year we forecast 950,000 passengers to/from Romania, and for 2009, we estimate 1.7 million passengers to increase to 2.5 million in 2010,” she opined.
