Top 10 best selling diesel cars in Romania

Hyundai Accent, Renault Clio and Skoda Octavia are the most popular diesel import cars in Romania this year, the first two models grabbing 6.5% share each of the total sales of diesel cars, while Octavia accounted for 5.2%.

Accent and Clio models are the only to totaled 1,000 units delivered this year, 1,115 Hyundai Accent and 1,107 Renault Clio being sold, according to Romanian Association of Car Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).

Skoda Octavia took up third spot in best selling diesel cars in Romania in first five months, with 888 units, being followed by Octavia Tour with 768 cars, which accounted to 4.7% of the total sales of diesel import cars.

Volkswagen sold 691 Passat diesel this year in Romania, grabbing 4% share of total sales of diesel cars.

Renault Megane stands at 6th position with 3,8% share in total sales and 640 units sold, followed by VW Jetta with 599 cars sold and Golf diesel with 576, accounting for 3.5% share and 3.4% respectively.

Peugeot 308 and Ford Focus took 2.3% - 2.2% portion of this year’s total diesel car sales, with 400 cars sold and 368 respectively.

In terms of car makers, VW picked up no1 with 2.561 diesel cars sold (15% share of diesel car sales), Renault with 2.348 units (13.7% share), Hyundai - 1,989 units (11.6%), Skoda – 1,976 (11.6%), Ford – 1.311 (7.7%). Peugeot, Opel, Toyota, Citroen and Mercedes Benz sold below 1,000 cars.

Romanians bought over 17,000 diesel import cars this year, down 53% from 36,376 in January-May 2008.
The sales of diesel cars accounted for 48% of the total sales in first five months last year. Currently, their share dropped to 41.6%.
